We said goodbye to our mother this morning and to an indomitable spirit that just would not quit. She kept going on and on until we wanted to believe that she simply could refuse to be subdued, that she alone among all humanity knew how to survive as long as she chose to. But as she liked to say, quoting a friend, "Humanity has a 100 percent mortality rate."
Yes, she was my mother, but she was unlike any other person I have met, and now that she is gone, there is a hole in our universe large enough to have been created only by such an imposing figure. I hope you have found the peace you so richly deserve, Mom. I hope we can carry on with whatever strength you have left us.
Your son, Roger
