On Sunday Mother stopped being able to swallow and we stopped giving her the dreaded yoghurt. She developed a fever developed a pneumonia. She was unconscious and we were able to keep her pain free with the Fentanyl patches and lorazepam.

She passed away quietly at 11:15 AM this morning, Wednesday March 1.

The head of the Beth El Chevra Kaddisha or Jewish burial society, David Klapper, came to the home and accompanied her to a funeral home in Durham called Howerton and Bryant where they prepared her according to Jewish ritual. Friends of ours will ‘sit’ with her from the time of her death until the flight to Buffalo reading from the Psalms. There will be a funeral service in Olean led by David Shulman on Friday morning at Casey Halwig and Hartle on 3128 NY Route 417, phone 716-372-0254. She’ll be buried in Portville Cemetery next to JMA van der Horst at a private family service.

The family will be sitting Shivah at Sonja’s home Saturday night at 7 PM in Olean, NY and at Charles van der Horst's home in Chapel Hill Sunday through Wednesday night at 7 PM.

Thanks for all of your support and kindness. As a reminder you can learn a lot about her on her website www.sonjavanderhorst.org. For those of you who don’t have high speed internet, you might try the public library. Those of you who would like a copy of her Holocaust testimony, please let the family known with your mailing address and whether or not you want DVD or VHS format.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the charities listed on Sonja’s website, www.sonjavanderhorst.org
